Johnny Depp v. The Court of Public Perception

Guilty until proven innocent - that's the motto of cancel culture and Johnny Depp's misfortune only demonstrates this.

Amber Heard and Johnny Depp are both actors who were married to each other from 2015 to 2017. I'm not going to go into the depths of their relationship, but their relationship was rocky, to say the least. Amber Heard publicly accused Johnny Depp of domestic violence and in turn the media branded him a "wife-beater" which demolished his reputation. He was subsequently cut from several big movies including the Fantastic Beasts franchise, meanwhile Amber Heard kept her role as Mera in the Aquaman franchise.

They've now gone to court for a second time with Johnny suing Amber for defamation. You may be wondering, why should we even care about another celebrity dispute? Well, the truth is, this trial is so much more than just another celebrity dispute. Bearing in mind that the verdict from the trial has not yet been determined, I think it's fair to say that Amber Heard is far from innocent. I mean, she likely threw a vodka bottle at Johnny which cut off the tip of his finger. If that doesn't scream that she's at least a little bit guilty, I don't know what does.

Guilty or not, Johnny Depp seemingly had far more "power" in his relationship with Amber Heard. He was the more famous one, the richer one, and the more connected one, but Amber had something he didn't - she is a woman. She used that to her advantage when she said to him, "tell [the world], I, Johnny Depp, I'm a victim of domestic abuse ... and see how many people believe or side with you". She not only made a mockery of all victims of domestic abuse, but used the fact that men are less likely to be believed as a victim, especially at the hands of a woman, against him.

Amber Heard and Johnny Depp's relationship was tumultuous and we can hardly know what really happened behind private doors, but what we do know is that Johnny Depp faced the brunt of media predation. That's not to say that Johnny Depp is completely innocent either as we have yet to see the rest of the trial, but his reputation was the one that was scarred. He was the one who lost parts in big movies and he was the one whose finger tip was cut off. If not for anything else, this trial shows how easy a person's hard-earned reputation, that took years to build, can be ruined, in a matter of moments.

As soon as Amber Heard and the media deemed fit, Johnny Depp was determined guilty by the court of public perception. Amber Heard may have been the one to weaponize being a woman against Johnny Depp, but ultimately we as a society are responsible for cancelling Johnny Depp. She demonstrates how a woman can demean a man with little regard for consequence. It's important to believe people when they say they are victims, of course, but not to the detriment of the pursuit of truth.
